In the heart of Chinatown in New York, a newly widowed eighty-year-old heavy smoker refuses to give up her addiction despite her family's pleas. When the local fortune-teller predicts her luckiest day, she doesn't hesitate and heads off to a casino with everything she has. Unfortunately, she also captures the attention of local gangsters, so she has no other choice but to hire a bodyguard from an enemy gang. This black comedy about immigrant life, ageing, and an unexpected friendship premiered at Tribeca.
The New York director and screenwriter made a name for herself already with her shorts, winning two prizes at Tribeca (Dance Mania Fantastic, 2005; The Elephant Garden, 2008). She currently works on such TV projects as An American Girl Story: Ivy and Julie 1976 for the Amazon streaming service. Lucky Grandma is her first feature.
