This bold feature-length debut explores the roots of radicalization via a contemporary coming-of-age story. Two sisters grow up in the Paris suburbs. After the social service tears them apart, the elder sister Hasna tries in vain to find her own identity, leading her to a choice that shocks the world. This film brings viewers a character study of Hasna Aït Boulahcen, a young woman connected with the November 2015 terrorist attacks in Paris, initially wrongly considered to be the first female suicide bomber in Europe.
This director, screenwriter, and producer grew up in the USA and Egypt and led a successful career in journalism before turning to film. Her debut You Resemble Me, which saw production support from such major names as Spike Lee, Spike Jonze, and Alma Har’el, premiered at the Venice Film Festival. In making it, the director made use of over 360 hours of interviews collected over the course of six years.
