The inspiration for this distinctive debut came after its director watched an emotional conversation between two middle-aged men. The protagonists are attempting to breach humanity’s oldest taboo – cannibalism. In a remote valley slowly eaten away by booming industrial cities, the two struggle to come to grips with a decision they have already taken – one that drives them to radical ends. Will they satisfy their desire to escape from the insufferable boredom of daily life? A film about the deep abyss of the human psyche, wherein moments of unhinged comedy flow freely into a western and an existential drama.
Sossai was born near the Italian Dolomites, which also inspired the setting for his first feature film. He studied modern languages and literature in Rome and directing at the German Film and Television Academy in Berlin, and he has also gathered filmmaking experience as a crew member for blockbusters like Mission: Impossible 7 (planned for 2023). Other Cannibals received the prize for best debut at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival.
