Veteran Serhiy suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder. After his brother takes his life, Serhiy starts working for a volunteer organization which exhumes the bodies of war victims. Here he meets Katya, who brings new energy into his life. Director Vasyanovych outlines a dystopian vision of a world in which Ukraine has won the war with Russia, once again owns the territory of Crimea and the Donbas but must build a wall on the border. He frames everything in greyed static images, works with suggestive sound, and used non-actors to achieve maximum authenticity.
Director, screenwriter, and cinematographer born in Zhytomyr, Ukraine, where he attended music school. At university he focused on cinematography and documentary filmmaking. Atlantis premiered at the Venice IFF, where it won the Orizzonti section. It has screened in Toronto and Tokyo, and received accolades in Ukraine. The film garnered six Golden Dzyga awards and won the Odesa IFF.
