Hans Hoffmann (Franz Rogowski) doesn't expect much from life in post-war West Germany. How could he, when the repressive regime considers being gay a crime and repeatedly imprisons him? Still, Hans has no intention of giving up the power to love. This subtle, romantic and wonderfully acted drama set in the brutal environment of prison shows that not even the darkest cell can take away a person's freedom.
Still Life (2011), the Austrian filmmaker’s debut, caused a stir after its screening at the San Sebastian IFF and Great Freedom won the Jury Prize in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes. Austria's selection for the Oscars, the film was short-listed for a nomination and received European Film Awards for cinematography and music, along with an EFA nomination for Franz Rogowki's performance. The film is currently in the running for the LUX Audience Award.
