Ondasyn goes to a town market to sell horses with the other villagers. When he's killed by horse thieves on the way, his wife Aigal is left alone with their son Olzhas and two daughters. With the villagers' help, she arranges the funeral and decides to go back to her family. At that moment, a man who left the village eight years ago suddenly returns. A man whom Olzhas suspiciously resembles. This meditative drama examines relationships between sons and fathers.

The Horse Thieves. Roads of Time was made in an unusual co-production. The Kazakh screenwriter and director won awards for his film Walnut Tree at several festivals including Busan IFF. The Japanese director and screenwriter is one of the rising stars of Japanese cinema and her film Haruko's Paranormal Laboratory was presented at Rotterdam IFF.
