Alice and Neil must return early from their tropical vacation to Britain so that they can attend to a tragic matter threatening their great family fortune. Neil, however, suddenly decides to remain in Acapulco. It seems that this enigmatic man wishes only to avoid an unpleasant errand – but his motivations are not at all so superficial. However, events take a rapid turn when Neil’s wealthy family is targeted by local robbers. The director’s favourite Tim Roth excels in the role of Neil.
This award-winning Mexican director has celebrated successes with films such as After Lucía (2012), which won the Cannes Un Certain Regard competition, and New Order (2020), which won the Grand Jury Prize in Venice. He returned last year to the world’s oldest film festival with a tranquil study of family relationships unfolding in a beautiful yet dangerous environment. After its premiere in Venice, Sundown was also shown in Toronto to a glowing critical response.
