Fifteen-year-old Joey and his younger brother are living with their aunt and uncle when their mother Daphne steps back in to raise them. The family can stay together under the condition that Joey can join a dance group. With duty gradually comes joy, but Daphne can’t share it with her son. Joey must choose whether to put his family first, or to stand up to his destructive mother and find his own happiness.
The Dutch director grew up in Ireland and studied filmmaking in Dublin and Amsterdam. He has numerous short films and television projects in his portfolio. His feature length debut I Don’t Wanna Dance was inspired by the life experiences of Yfendo van Praag, who plays the lead in the film. The film received awards at several international festivals.
