Asia works as a nurse in a Jerusalem hospital. After work, she goes to bars and enjoys casual sex with a colleague. Her seventeen-year-old daughter Vika does not get along with her very well. She prefers spending time with her friends at the local skatepark. But circumstances force Asia to abandon this routine and become the responsible mother that Vika has missed so far. Shira Haas, known from the miniseries Unorthodox, excels in this sober, emotionally intense relationship drama.
The Israeli director and editor has already received recognition for her short films Last Calls (2012) and The Caregiver (2018), screened and awarded at international festivals. Her feature debut Asia was made as part of The Residence, a programme for emerging filmmakers organised annually by the Cannes Film Festival. It has been awarded at both the Tribeca and the Jerusalem festivals, and was the Best Picture Winner at the Ophir Awards.
