Elenor Riese suffers from paranoid attacks and is hospitalized in a psychiatric unit in San Francisco. When the doctors refuse to reduce her drug dosage, she contacts the lawyer Colette Hughes. Based on true events, the story draws from a legal case that became a precedent in psychiatric care in the USA. Set in the 1980s, the courtroom drama pays homage to the actual participants in the lawsuit.
