A native of Prague, he graduated from the Department of Screenwriting and Dramaturgy at FAMU, where he now works as a professor. He has become famous for his collaboration with Jan Hřebejk, for whom he has written the majority of his screenplays. Nominated for the Czech Lion thirteen times, he is a three-time winner (for the screenplays of the films Divided We Fall, 2000 and Up and Down, 2004 and for the miniseries Monsters of the Shore, 2019).
