In a fictional fenced-in sports field, people pass by who have no names – just numbers. Their lives are overseen by referees, and a great god bearing the number Zero watches over them all. This god is, however, invisible and swathed in secrecy. The characters have no control over anything in their lives, and eventually begin to wonder if the Great Zero even exists... A dystopian vision based on a play written by Oleh Sentsov just before he was imprisoned by the Russian regime.
The Ukrainian director attracted attention with his debut Gamer (2011). In 2012 he began work on his film Rhino. Two years later, however, he demonstrated against the Russian invasion and was arrested by the Russian FSB after the annexation of Crimea. He was sentenced to twenty years imprisonment and remained behind bars until September 2019. He directed the film Numbers, a co-production with Czech Television, via letters from prison.
