The English countryside in 1865. Katherine is forced into a marriage of convenience with an elderly squire. But it's a young peasant working at the estate who awakens the love within her. The powerful emotion gives her an immense strength and Katherine decides to take matters in her own hands at all costs. The film is an adaptation of Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District, a drama by the Russian writer and playwright Nikolai Leskov.
