A wintry Dutch landscape, a poor man and two young orphans. Jacob and Maria are left by their father to their cruel fate in a deep forest full of dark characters. A message from their mother urges them to go to their uncle in Spain. Eventually, they do find themselves in the south of Europe. But when Maria marries a mysterious yet wealthy surgeon, Diego, who lives with his taciturn sister, the aloof Jacob finds the connection suspicious... We will present the film from 2003 in a new director's cut.
The Dutch filmmaker and theatre-maker has already made a variation on the dark Brothers Grimm fairy tale. But he wasn’t fully satisfied with the 2003 version that competed in San Sebastian, and sixteen years later, he recut it and added new sound, music and visuals. However, he keeps his typical biting black humour to the disturbing story of the journey of the adult version of Hansel and Gretel.
