A riveting biographical drama inspired by the real life of healer Jan Mikolášek, a man whom thousands of people of all social classes approached for help for decades. Mikolášek, played by Ivan Trojan and his son Josef, is a man without a scientific medical education, but with an inexplicable ability to cure illnesses which even doctors are helpless about. But as a price for his gift, he is plagued by his own demons. The film's world premiere was at Berlinale 2020, Charlatan was shortlisted for the Oscars and won five Czech Lions.
Graduate of the Film and TV School of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague and one of most distinctive female directors of today's. Her films have collected three Oscar nominations (Angry Harvest, 1985; Europa Europa, 1990; In Darkness, 2011). The film version of her TV mini-series Burning Bush (2013) won eleven Czech Lion Awards. Charlatan got her a Czech Lion, Czech Film Critics Award and her first European Film Award nomination.
