Filmmakers Tony and Chris receive an opportunity to spend several weeks as artists in residence on the island of Fårö, right in the places where Ingmar Bergman lived and worked. However, the stay and their work on their scripts soon begin to set the pair apart. While the successful Tony works to develop his career, Chris tries to penetrate Bergman’s mysterious, inspiring, and problematic world. The topic she is working on begins to blend more and more with reality – and the heroine of her story reveals feelings that Chris is hiding even from herself.
The works of this French director with Nordic roots who began her career as an actress in the films of Olivier Assayas are repeatedly showing up at the world’s largest festivals, such as Cannes (the 2009 Un Certain Regard jury prize for her film Father of My Children) and the Berlinale (a directing prize for 2016’s Things to Come). Bergman Island competed for Cannes’ Palme d’Or and was also shown at a number of other festivals.
