Maurice Flitcroft (Mark Rylance) has not chosen golf, it was rather golf that has chosen him. It was pure destiny. At least this is how the story is told by Maurice, who, after having spent many dull and unsatisfactory years of his life, decided to have a shot at the world of professional golf in his late years. He is not particularly good at it, even earning the press-awarded title of „the worst player in history”, but isn't sport about having fun, after all? An easy-going movie inspired by the real story offers an Ed Wood-like figure of the sports world.
The 31-year-old Welshman is known mainly for his acting. He claimed wider fame by the film Submarine (2010), and his part of Oliver Tate in it has since been bringing him roles of eccentric youths. He became interested in directing though, using his experience in front of the camera in this trade, with his own films excelling in work with the actors. His third film, The Phantom of the Open, was premiered at the London Film Festival.
