In Paris, American student Matthew (Michael Pitt) meets a brother (Louis Garrel) and sister (Eva Green), with whom he shares a passion for film. When their parents leave for the country, he moves in with them and finds out their relationship surpasses the boundaries of ordinary sibling affection. Bernardo Bertolucci's film is a story about free love set against the backdrop of student riots in 1968.
