The 1967 film by the visionary director and docu-drama pioneer Peter Watkins is set in the near future (in '67) of the 1970s in an alternative semi-Fascist Britain. The main protagonist is a disappointed pop singer, Steven Shorter (musician Paul Jones), who is manipulated and ruled by corporations, censors and the Church, who try to turn him into a Messianic leader. A film which was ahead of its times.
