Arvid and Lydia fall madly in love, but early 20th century high society in Stockholm favors marriages of convenience rather than love. The story of passion, just as intoxicating as destructive, is based on a novel by an icon of Swedish literature, Hjalmar Soderberg. The film was directed by actress and director Pernilla August, a long-term co-worker of Ingmar Bergman.
